Objectives of PMMVY
Due to poverty, many Indian women are often undernourished, having limited access to adequate food. The government has consistently aimed to introduce beneficial health schemes to ensure at least basic nutrition for women and children. The Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana (PMMVY) falls under the Ministry of Women and Child Development.
The primary goal of PMMVY is to provide partial compensation to pregnant and lactating women who were employed but faced wage loss due to pregnancy.
During pregnancy, a woman needs additional nutrition to maintain her health and support a healthy delivery.
The cash incentive, disbursed in three installments, helps meet the essential daily nutritional needs of expecting mothers, ensuring the funds are used for their nourishment.
Beneficiaries of the PMMVY Scheme
All pregnant women (PW) and breastfeeding mothers (LM), except those employed by the State Government, Central Government, or Public Sector Undertakings, as well as those already receiving similar benefits under other applicable laws.
Monetary Benefits
The table below shows the details of financial support provided under the scheme, based on the installment claimed
Installment Number | Requirements | Ammount |
1 | Register the pregnancy within 150 days of the last period | Rs. 1,000 |
2 | Apply for the benefit about 6 months after the last period. | Rs. 2,000 |
3 | Claim the benefit after the baby is born | Rs. 2,000 |
Nutritional Needs
Pregnant and breastfeeding mothers need extra nutrients to keep themselves and their babies healthy. They should eat about 200 more calories each day than usual, based on their height and weight.
The World Health Organization says that babies should only be fed breast milk for the first 6 months. For this to happen, mothers need to eat enough nutritious food to provide the right amount of nutrients to their babies.
The PMMVY scheme helps mothers meet these extra nutritional needs for themselves and their babies.
Additional Benefits
Cash Incentives: Eligible mothers receive money in three parts:
- First Installment: ₹1,000 for registering the pregnancy early.
- Second Installment: ₹2,000 after six months of pregnancy and at least one doctor visit.
- Third Installment: ₹2,000 after the baby is born and registered, along with the first vaccinations.
Extra Cash Incentive: Mothers also get an additional ₹1,000 through the Janani Suraksha Yojana (JSY) for giving birth at a hospital, making the total amount ₹6,000 from both the PMMVY and JSY schemes.
Courage
The PMMVY scheme is designed to give cash support to pregnant and breastfeeding women who have lost their income because of their pregnancy. In addition to the three payments that can be claimed within 150 days, 180 days, and at childbirth, the scheme does not offer any other benefits.
