For the development of skills and to prevent unemployment among the youth, the Government of India has started the Prime Minister Internship Scheme 1 Crore Youth 2024. The government introduced the scheme through Finance Minister Mrs. Nirmala Sitharaman in the presentation of the Union Budget 2024-25 while aiming to provide internships along with financial support to one million young Indians to bridge that gap between education and employment.

The Prime Minister Internship Scheme would be the program through which unemployed youth with a finished education but no experience of any form of work will be offered internship opportunities. Eligibility Criteria for the Prime Minister Internship Scheme
In order to maintain focus and inclusiveness at the same time, there are well articulated criterion for eligibility to the scheme: Age: Applicants must be in the age bracket of 21 years but less than 24 years. Employment Status: In this regard, candidates must be free from full time employment. Family Background: Youth coming from the households where parents are government employees are not eligible. Educational Background: Those who have studied in institutions like IITs, IIMs and above, or hold professional courses like CA or CMA are barred from this. However, graduates from Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) and skill development centers (Kaushal Kendras) are encouraged.

Internship Program Structure and Implementation
- The internship program is structured in such a way that it provides adequate skill building within one year. The minimum period the applicant must spend in an applied environment is six months to ensure he gets worthwhile work experience.
- Prominent Features of the Scheme:
- Internship Duration: One year.
- Stipend: The stipend which the interns would receive is fixed, being INR 5,000 per month. That is, it is INR 4,500 from the government and INR 500 from companies.
- Phased Rollout: The program would be rolled out in two phases where in five years time, 10 million youth would be skilled. It is expected that within the first two years, 3 million youth would be skilled, and 7 million within the last three years.
- Companies Involved: 500 companies have been assigned for the scheme with internship opportunities in every sector.
- CSR Contributions: The company may contribute toward the stipend of the intern through its CSR program. The company can provide more than the amount fixed for the stipend if so desired.
Internship Portal and Application Process
A dedicated web portal for the Prime Minister Internship Scheme would be released on October 3, 2024. This web portal would simplify the application process; eligible candidates can apply to most companies for an internship.

Step 1: One must first visit the internship portal officially launched.
Step 2: A prominent ‘Apply Here’ button would be available on the home page.
Step 3: Fill the application form with all important information and upload pertinent attachments.
Step 4: Check the application for errors and then submit the application form.

Candidates can begin submitting their applications from 12 October 2024 when the portal shall be live.

Selection Procedure
The selection of interns will be merit-based and fair. The auto selection system will pick the best student who would suit the company. The companies will go through the list prepared by the auto selection system. If they do not find the candidates for these positions satisfactory enough, then the process will start all over again. To avoid biased decisions, a panel of government and industry officials will monitor this process.
